    Roger S. Gil, M.A.M.F.T.

I am many things to many people: son, brother, thorn-in-the-side… but one thing I’m not is too foolish to publish too much about myself online.

    Things that matter to me:
    1) my faith in God
2 ) the people in my life
    3) making sure I leave this planet in better shape than I found it in

Most of what I do pretty much revolves around one or more of the 3 things listed above. When I’m not at work trying to right society’s wrongs, in therapy sessions with clients, in front of a computer, or drinking coffee, I’m thinking of ways to make my mark. So if you’re into hiphop, love, God, technology and all things in between then read on.

    Background:
With respect to my education, I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology at Montclair State University in 2002. I then went on to pursue my graduate studies at Kean University, where I earned my Master’s degree in Behavioral Sciences & Psychological Services in 2005. My work included a thesis that explored the correlations between interfaith relationships and conflict in heterosexual individuals in committed relationships. I continued my post-graduate studies at Kean where I recently completed the requirements for a Professional Diploma in Marriage and Family Therapy (to be awarded in January 2010).

Professionally speaking, I’ve done several things. I’ve worked in retail. I was even a preschool teacher in an urban school at one point. However the majority of my work experience has come from the mental health field. I worked for a local non-profit agency that empowers the families of children with emotional difficulties by helping them build a team of supports that will ensure stability in the community for more than 4 years. Currently, I work as a counselor/therapist (specializing in couples' counseling) at another local agency, where I work with individuals, couples, and families to work out their issues. Other clinical experience included work in a community outpatient counseling center, an inpatient psychiatric ward, and work as an in-home counselor.

The area of my life that underpins everything I do and say is my faith in God. I am a practicing Christian who tries his best to live by the doctrines set forth in the bible. I shun traditions, dogmas, and man-inspired mysticism and choose to base my beliefs on observations of the world around me and whatever those observations can lead me to deduce about the nature of the universe. My faith is not inherited, it is informed. My personal studies have spanned the fields of basic moral philosophy, Christian Apologetics, and anything that can challenge my assumptions and show me the truth.
